Aircraft Carriers played a significant role in World War Two. The function of the aircraft carrier is basically to serve as a mobile airbase. During World War Two, most aircraft had a limited range (maybe a few hundred miles) so aircraft carriers were needed to move these aircraft close enough to be in range of their targets. A good example of this was the Doolittle Raid in which B-25 Mitchell bombers were transported on the carrier U.S.S. Hornet to get within range of the Japanese main islands. Aircraft carriers and their fighters/dive bombers played a crucial role in battles at Midway, Coral Sea, and Guadalcanal. Aircraft carriers are still used today to provide the U.S. Navy with the ability to project U.S. military power globally.
