Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy was one of the most decorated and famous American soldiers of World War 2. He earned the Medal of Honor by single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers in France, also leading a successful counter-attack while wounded. When asked after the war why he had seized the machine gun and taken on an entire company of German infantry, Murphy replied simply, "They were killing my friends." [1]
After the war, Murphy became an actor, portraying himself in an autobiographical film, and in many westerns. Unfortunately, he suffered from what is now know as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), trying to find peace through things like sleeping pills. Murphy was killed in a plane crash in Virginia in 1971 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary. [1] "War" excerpt about Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta's actions".
